Student United Way “Zombie 5K” Raises $6,000

October 31, 2016 (Salisbury, MD) -- Salisbury University’s Student United Way recently held the 3rd Annual Zombie 5K and 1-Mile Walk in support of the local United Way, raising a record-breaking $6,000 with over 125 participants.  The event featured a “Zombie-Infested” 5K Course, 1 Mile Zombie Walk and after party, and was supported by 25 event sponsors and over 50 volunteers from Salisbury University Student United Way and local community groups.

Attendees enjoyed an officially-timed 5K course & 1 mile walk, complete with over 20 zombies lurking about the University grounds. The outdoor after-party included an awards ceremony for top runners overall and by age group, as well as DJ entertainment by Rothschild Broadcasting Cat Country 97.5 and WXSU Radio.  The celebration also included a costume contest, refreshments, games and prizes. Our Student United Way and other volunteers gave an over-the-top effort this year, with the greatest benefit being to support our local United Way and Lower Shore Community.”

“Zany Zombie” Sponsors contributing $500 included the Salisbury University Foundation, BEACON at Salisbury University, Frontier Town Campground, Pepsi Bottling Ventures, Rothschild Broadcasting Cat Country 97.5 and Johnson, Mirmiran & Thompson. “Vicious Vampire” Sponsors contributing $250 included The Law Firm of Michael B. Mathers, Chesapeake Utilities, Salisbury Housing, Avery Hall Insurance, Baywater Greens, Comprehensive Financial Solutions, Choptank Electric Cooperative, Etch-Art Awards, Allen & Shariff, Powerhouse Gym and Apple Discount Drugs.  “Ghastly Ghost” Sponsors contributing $100 towards the event included Express Employment Professionals, The Original Greene Turtle, North meets South Music Duo, The Garigliano Family, Kim & Associates, CPA, Gateway Pediatrics & The Law Firm of George G. Strott, Jr.  Other generous supporters included Rise Up Coffee, Food Lion, Sam’s Club and Target.

Now in the club’s fourth year, Salisbury University’s Student United Way gives students the opportunity to better the local community by fundraising, advocating and volunteering in the critical areas of Education, Income and Health.  The Salisbury University chapter, Maryland's first collegiate Student United Way, is in partnership with United Way of the Lower Eastern Shore and Salisbury University.  In the 2015-2016 school year alone, students completed over 2,400 volunteer hours and raised over $5,000 for United Way of the Lower Eastern Shore.
