Wellness Made Easy, a collaborative launched by UWLES, TidalHealth, BEACON at Salisbury University, and Wicomico Public Libraries, is a community-wide partnership of stakeholders serving the four Lower Eastern Shore counties.

Our mission: To disseminate in Wicomico, Worcester, Dorchester and Somerset counties developmentally, culturally and linguistically appropriate, health education via multiple outlets to support healthy living.

Health Literacy is the degree to which individuals have the capacity to obtain, process and understand health information and services needed to make appropriate health decisions.

  • Limited health literacy disproportionately affects lower socioeconomic and minority groups and is associated with poor health outcomes and higher costs.

  • Health literacy is fundamental to the success of interactions between health care professionals and patients.

  • Individuals with limited health literacy often lack knowledge about the body and the cause of disease resulting in a misunderstanding of the relationship between lifestyle factors and health outcomes.

  • 9 out of 10 adults have difficulty using everyday health information that is routinely available in our health care facilities, retail outlets, media and communities.

  • The American Medical Association found that poor health literacy is a stronger predictor of a person’s health, than age, income, employment status, education level and race.

  • The American Medical Association estimates 90 million low heath literate Americans.

Benefits of improving health literacy:

  • Increased competency and confidence to access and implement health information needed to promote healthy behaviors and make appropriate health decisions.

  • Increased capacity to prevent disease and illness through self-care and chronic disease management.

  • Increased appropriate access of the health care system.

  • Reduction of the misuse of the health care system.

  • Reduction of costs within the health care system.

  • Healthier workforce – reduction of lost time at work.

  • Improved financial stability for families – reduction of lost wages & health care costs.

Program Delivery Description:

Provide health information in various formats, printed/digital/phone apps in multiple community access points, to ensure individuals are able to obtain, process and understand basic health information and services needed to make beneficial health decisions.
